Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon)

Vietnam's largest city is a whirlwind of motorbikes, street food, history, and nightlife. Here's everything you need to know as a backpacker.

Getting Around

Download the Grab app — it's the Uber of Southeast Asia and works for motorbikes and cars. Super cheap for short rides across District 1. Walking is great for the backpacker area.

Street Food Must-Tries

Pho (breakfast noodle soup), Banh Mi (Vietnamese baguette sandwich), Bun Thit Nuong (grilled pork noodles), and Ca Phe Sua Da (iced coffee with condensed milk). Street meals are incredibly cheap.

Nightlife

Bui Vien Street is the backpacker party strip — cheap beers, loud music, street food everywhere. Join our pub crawl (Tue/Thu/Sat) for the best experience. Craft beer spots and cocktail bars are growing too.

Must-See Sights

War Remnants Museum, Cu Chi Tunnels (half-day trip), Reunification Palace, Ben Thanh Market, Notre Dame Cathedral, and the Saigon Central Post Office. Most are walkable from our hostel.

Day Trips

Mekong Delta (full day, boat trips through floating markets and coconut candy villages), Cu Chi Tunnels (half day, Viet Cong war tunnels), and Vung Tau beach (2-hour bus). We book all of these at reception.

Budget Tips

Eat where locals eat (plastic chairs on the sidewalk = best food). Negotiate at markets. Use Grab instead of tourist taxis. Buy a local SIM card at the airport for unlimited data. Vietnam is one of the most affordable travel destinations in the world.

Hanoi

Vietnam's charming capital city blends ancient temples, French colonial architecture, and the best street food in the country.

Old Quarter

The beating heart of Hanoi. Wander the 36 streets, each named after the goods originally sold there. Chaotic, beautiful, and endlessly photogenic. Night markets on weekends.

Food Capital

Hanoi is the birthplace of Pho. Try Bun Cha (grilled pork with noodles — Obama ate it here), Egg Coffee at Giang Cafe, and Beer Corner at Ta Hien Street where fresh draft beer is incredibly cheap.

Getting There

Flights from HCMC take 2 hours (VietJet or Bamboo have cheap fares). Sleeper trains take 30-34 hours but are an experience in themselves. Book at our reception.

Hoi An & Da Nang

Ancient town lanterns, tailored suits, incredible beaches, and the best banh mi in Vietnam.

Hoi An Ancient Town

UNESCO World Heritage Site. Lantern-lit streets, Japanese Covered Bridge, and the best tailor shops in Asia. Get a custom suit made in 24 hours. The town is magical at night.

An Bang Beach

Just 4km from the old town by bicycle. White sand, beach bars, and much less crowded than Da Nang beaches. Perfect for a lazy day.

Da Nang

The bigger city nearby with the famous Dragon Bridge (fire-breathing on weekends!), Marble Mountains, and Ba Na Hills with the Golden Bridge. 30 minutes from Hoi An by Grab.

Hue

Vietnam's former imperial capital with royal tombs, a massive citadel, and some of the country's most unique cuisine.

Imperial Citadel

The massive walled fortress complex was the seat of Nguyen Dynasty emperors. Heavily damaged during the war but beautifully restored. Budget half a day to explore.

Royal Tombs

Scattered along the Perfume River. Rent a motorbike and visit Tu Duc, Khai Dinh, and Minh Mang tombs. Each has unique architecture and peaceful gardens.

Local Food

Hue has its own cuisine distinct from the rest of Vietnam. Try Bun Bo Hue (spicy beef noodle soup), Banh Beo (steamed rice cakes), and Nem Lui (grilled pork skewers).

Nha Trang

Vietnam's beach party capital with island hopping, diving, and nightlife.

Island Hopping

The famous boat tours visit 4 islands with snorkeling, floating bars, and lunch included. Book through us for the best price. Expect a wild day on the water.

Diving

Some of the cheapest PADI certifications in the world. Some of the cheapest Open Water courses you'll find anywhere. Visibility is best from Feb-Sep.

Getting There

Sleeper bus from HCMC takes 10-12 hours overnight (very affordable). Flights take 1 hour. We book both at reception.

Da Lat

Vietnam's misty mountain town — cool weather, canyoning, and quirky Crazy House architecture.

Canyoning

The #1 activity. Rappel down waterfalls, cliff jump, slide through natural water slides. Dalat is one of the best places in the world for this. Book through reputable operators.

Crazy House

Architect Dang Viet Nga's surreal guesthouse looks like a Gaudi fever dream. Winding staircases, tree-like structures, and secret passages. A must-visit.

Night Market

Dalat's night market is famous for grilled corn, strawberry jam, artichoke tea, and warm soy milk. Perfect for the cool mountain evenings.

Ha Long Bay

UNESCO World Heritage limestone karsts rising from emerald waters. Overnight boat trips are a Vietnam must-do.

Boat Trips

Options range from budget to mid-range with better food and smaller groups. Book from Hanoi — we can help arrange from Saigon too.

Kayaking & Caves

Most tours include kayaking through limestone caves and grottoes. Sung Sot (Surprise Cave) is the biggest and most impressive. Bring a waterproof phone case.

Cat Ba Island

A great alternative base for Ha Long Bay. Less touristy, has its own national park for trekking, and boat trips leave from here to Lan Ha Bay (equally stunning, fewer boats).

Sapa

Terraced rice paddies, hill tribe homestays, and Vietnam's highest peak — Fansipan.

Trekking

Multi-day treks through rice terraces with homestays in hill tribe villages. Cat Cat Village is a gentle day hike. Longer treks to Ta Van and Lao Chai offer deeper immersion. Best with a local guide.

Fansipan

Vietnam's highest peak (3,143m). Take the cable car for stunning views, or do the 2-day trek if you're feeling ambitious. The summit is often above the clouds.

Best Time to Visit

Sep-Nov for golden rice terraces (harvest season). Mar-May for green paddies. Dec-Feb is cold and foggy but atmospheric. Avoid June-Aug rainy season.

Ha Giang Loop

Vietnam's most spectacular motorbike route — jaw-dropping mountain passes, remote villages, and the real frontier of adventure travel.

The Loop

A 3-4 day motorbike loop through the northernmost province. Ma Pi Leng Pass is the highlight — one of the most dramatic roads in Southeast Asia. Hire a bike or go with an easy rider (local driver). Not for inexperienced riders.

Dong Van & Meo Vac

Tiny mountain towns with local markets and homestays. The Sunday Dong Van market is a cultural highlight — ethnic minority groups come from surrounding hills to trade. Meo Vac's market runs on Sundays too.

Getting There

Sleeper bus from Hanoi to Ha Giang city (6-8 hours, departs evening). Rent bikes and gear in Ha Giang city. Best time: Sep-Nov for clear skies and golden rice, or Mar-May for green valleys. Avoid Dec-Feb (cold fog) and Jul-Aug (heavy rain).

Ninh Binh

The "Ha Long Bay on land" — limestone karsts, winding rivers, and ancient temples surrounded by rice paddies.

Tam Coc & Trang An

Take a boat through caves and karst landscapes. Trang An is the UNESCO-listed boat ride (2-3 hours, multiple cave grottoes). Tam Coc is more rustic and less crowded. Both are stunning — pick one or do both.

Mua Cave Viewpoint

500 steps up to one of Vietnam's most iconic viewpoints. Arrive early morning or late afternoon to avoid crowds and heat. The view over Tam Coc valley is worth every step.

Getting There

Just 2 hours south of Hanoi by bus or train. Easy day trip, but better as an overnight to fit everything in. Rent a bicycle or motorbike to explore the rice paddy roads between sites.

Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park

Home to the world's largest caves and some of Vietnam's most pristine jungle. A paradise for adventurous travelers.

Paradise Cave & Phong Nha Cave

Paradise Cave is a 31km underground system — the tourist section alone is breathtaking. Phong Nha Cave is explored by boat up a river into the mountain. Both are accessible as day trips from Phong Nha town.

Dark Cave

The adventure option — zipline across the river, swim through pitch-black cave waters, and mud bath inside the cave. An absolute must-do. Book directly at the park entrance.

Getting There

Phong Nha is in central Vietnam. Sleeper bus or train to Dong Hoi (nearest city), then 45-min shuttle to Phong Nha village. Overnight bus from Hanoi (10hrs) or Hue (4hrs). The village itself is tiny and very backpacker-friendly.

Mui Ne

Vietnam's kitesurfing capital with towering sand dunes, a fishing village, and a laid-back beach vibe.

Sand Dunes

White and Red Sand Dunes are the main draw. Hire a jeep or go at sunrise/sunset. The White Dunes feel like a mini Sahara. Red Dunes are closer to town and great for sand sliding on plastic sleds from local vendors.

Kitesurfing & Watersports

Mui Ne is one of the top kitesurfing spots in Asia. Consistent wind from Oct-Apr. Beginner courses are great value. Surfing, paddleboarding, and windsurfing are also available year-round.

Getting There

5-6 hour bus from HCMC (very cheap). The Sinh Tourist and Futa Bus are reliable operators. We book at reception. Mui Ne is also a nice stopover between HCMC and Da Lat or Nha Trang.

Phu Quoc

Vietnam's tropical island paradise — white sand beaches, snorkeling, night markets, and stunning sunsets on the west coast.

Beaches

Long Beach is the main strip with resorts and restaurants. Sao Beach (Bai Sao) is the postcard-perfect white sand beach on the south side. Ong Lang Beach on the west coast is quieter and great for sunsets. Rent a motorbike to explore them all.

Snorkeling & Diving

The southern islands have clear water and coral reefs. Day boat trips run from An Thoi port including lunch and snorkeling gear. PADI diving is cheap here too. Best visibility: Nov-May.

Getting There

1-hour flight from HCMC (VietJet has cheap fares). Alternatively, bus to Ha Tien or Rach Gia, then ferry to the island. Flights are usually the best value. The Dinh Cau Night Market is a must for fresh seafood.

Mekong Delta

A world of floating markets, river life, tropical fruit orchards, and the most authentic rural Vietnam experience you'll find.

Floating Markets

Cai Rang (near Can Tho) is the biggest — arrive by 6 AM for the full experience. Boats sell everything from pineapples to pho. Cai Be market is smaller and closer to HCMC. Both are best visited by hiring a local boat.

Day Trips from Saigon

The most popular option — a 1-day tour from HCMC covers coconut candy workshops, boat rides through narrow canals, fruit tasting, and lunch. We arrange these directly from reception at The Hideout. Great value and a perfect day out.

Going Deeper

For a more immersive experience, stay overnight in Can Tho. Explore by bicycle, visit the floating market at dawn, and eat your way through the region's incredible food scene. Bus from HCMC to Can Tho takes 3-4 hours.
